Before I knew who Frank Herbert was, before the likes of Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive taught me what to expect from a David Lynch movie, I watched a film called Dune. Perhaps that's the reason I approached it with an open mind and for all intents and purposes was blown away by its epic scale.
Sure, once you've read the book the flaws become obvious, and some of the changes seem a bit odd (weirding modules anyone. Still, I appreciate Lynch's uncompromising vision. Some might argue that putting his own stamp on one of the greatest sci fi books of all time was an insult. Still, the fact that there has not been a big budget remake since shows that it simply ain't that easy to recreate Dune on the big screen. Even the incessant inner monologues add to the eery atmosphere of this movie.
To me this adaptation works fine on its own and is a triumph in sci fi film making. Those who want a more faithful adaption can look to the lower budget Sci Fi channel TV series from the year 2000. Let's hope that a big budget remake will finally get the green light and one day satisfy everyone's hopes. I won't be hold my breath though.

I don't quite get the statement about the police. Monumental version that truly breathes life into the universe as envisioned by Herbert. May it be enjoyed by legions.

The film never touches on why the Fremen are so strong and what made Duke Leto willingly step into the Emperors trap.
